Family photos are timeless keepsakes, capturing special moments and creating lasting memories. One of the biggest challenges, though, can be deciding what everyone should wear! Coordinating outfits for family photos doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning, you can create a cohesive, polished look without everyone wearing the exact same thing. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you coordinate outfits for your next family photo session.

1. Start with a Color Palette

Choosing a color palette is the key to making sure everyone’s outfits work together without being too matchy. Instead of having everyone wear the same color, pick 3–4 complementary shades that go well together. Think about the season, location, and the vibe you’re going for. Here are some ideas:

  • Fall: Earthy tones like rust, mustard, navy, and olive.
  • Winter: Jewel tones like deep red, emerald, or sapphire with touches of grey or black.
  • Spring: Pastels like blush pink, soft blue, and lavender paired with neutrals like cream or beige.
  • Summer: Bright and vibrant colors like coral, turquoise, and sunny yellow paired with white or khaki.

Tip: Keep the setting in mind. If your photos are taken in a lush, green park, softer neutrals or pops of color will stand out nicely. If the backdrop is busy, go for simpler, solid colors.

2. Avoid Clashing Patterns

Patterns can add texture and personality to the photos, but too many competing designs can be distracting. If one family member wears a bold pattern (such as plaid or florals), balance it with others in solid colors or subtle prints. Mix and match, but in moderation:

  • Dos: Stripes, polka dots, or small floral patterns.
  • Don’ts: Large logos or graphics that can draw attention away from the faces.

3. Consider the Location and Season

Your family photo location will heavily influence your outfit choices. For example, if you’re doing a fall session in the Smoky Mountains, warm tones and layers make sense. For a beach photo session, think flowy fabrics and lighter colors.

  • In the mountains: Add cozy textures like scarves, cardigans, or vests to complement the outdoor setting.
  • On the beach: Opt for light fabrics that flow with the breeze, and soft, neutral tones to match the calm coastal vibes.

4. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of dressing everyone in the same color, use your palette to coordinate. For example, if you’re using shades of blue, one person could wear a light blue top, another in navy, and someone else in a denim jacket. This approach allows for individual style while still maintaining a cohesive look.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to mix in different textures like knits, denim, linen, or leather to add dimension to the photo.

5. Dress for Comfort

While style is important, comfort is key. If you or your kids are uncomfortable in their outfits, it will show in the photos. Make sure everything fits well and allows for easy movement—especially with young kids! Also, consider the weather. Layers work well in cooler months, while lightweight fabrics are ideal for warmer temperatures.

6. Accessorize Thoughtfully

Accessories can enhance your photos but should be used sparingly. Think scarves, hats, or jewelry, but avoid anything too bold that might detract from the faces or expressions. Coordinated accessories can help pull outfits together, adding a subtle finishing touch without overwhelming the image.

7. Lay Out the Outfits Together

Once you’ve chosen everyone’s outfits, lay them out on a bed or floor to see how they look together. This way, you can easily spot any colors that don’t blend or patterns that might clash. It’s easier to adjust before the day of the shoot.

8. Incorporate Personality

Lastly, let everyone’s personality shine! While it’s important to look cohesive as a group, it’s equally important for everyone to feel like themselves. If one child loves wearing cowboy boots or another prefers a certain color, try to incorporate those pieces in a way that still fits the overall look.

Final Thoughts

Family photos are meant to capture your unique bond, so don’t stress too much about getting everything perfect. Focus on coordinating outfits that reflect your family’s personality, are seasonally appropriate, and make everyone feel confident and comfortable. By following these tips, you’ll create timeless photos you’ll cherish for years to come!
